Abstract

"A quest for wisdom has characterized notable thinker of breadth and depth in both East and West, in both China and Greece. The Greeks humbly named this rational activity, "philosophy", not the possession of wisdom, but the love of such wisdom as could guide our lives. The revered Chinese sages also sought to understand human life in its natural and social context, and guide it toward wise values. Under many names, and in many ways, civilization emerged as human life sought to understand itself, by examining its received opinions and practice. Traditional opinions about the cosmos, religion, ethics, politics, morals, and practical technology are examined and refined or rejected in this philosophical quest for wisdom."
