Abstract
China's higher education has experienced great changes in its administrative system since the founding of People's Republic of China in 1949. This paper addresses these changes from a historical perspective by diving roughly the reform of the administrative system of China's higher Education into three periods. The first period is the Formation (mid 1950-mid 1960s) when China's higher education reflected a feature of statism and centralism. The second period is the Confusion (mid-1960s-1976) when the higher education almost collapsed during the Cultural Revolution. The third period is the Reform (late 1970s so far) when, along with the economic reform, China's higher education enjoys more autonomy then ever before. This paper also points out that the reform of the administrative system of china's higher education be deepened.
