Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to compare the categories utilized in two ontologies widely separated in time and space, both concerned with creativity.  Conclusions: 1) Whitehead's ontology provides a more complete analysis of the modality of being, including a mode of the past in addition to modes of the present and future (common to both).  2) Chu Hsi's "eternal objects," cast in terms of "li" or "principle", project a more natural relevance to ethics than those of Whitehead, shaped in aesthetic terms.  3) Study of its cross-cultural counterpart may provide clues for strengthening each tradition.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
