Abstract

This paper attempts to work out the basic meaning of Chu Hsi's doctrine of mind with the help of some insights suggested by Whitehead's metaphysics.  It contends that Chu Hsi's philosophy is not so much "dualistic" as it is "organismic," a philosophy of "jen", the essence of which is "sheng", life or creative procreativity.  What makes jen creatively procreative is its inherent power of "sensitivity" -- what defines the basic meaning of mentality in Chu Hsi.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
