Abstract

Continuing a former dialogue between Whitehead and Chinese philosophy, this essay presents an overall view of their relationship, both philosophically and in the historical context.  It is argued that the identification of reality with life as such -- rather than with any particular aspect of it, is what they have in common.  Rooted in the primordial intuitions of the "I Ching", Chinese philosophy is at bottom not so much a form of "organic naturalism" as Needham suggested, as a care-oriented philosophy of significance.  A more profound affinity between Whitehead and Chinese philosophy is obtainable if viewed from this vantage point.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
