Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to compare Whitehead's and Chu Hsi's (1130-1200) conceptions of self metaphysically.  It involves a consideration of "actual occasions" and "shih-wu" ("activities in things"): the ultimate unit for Chu Hsi is the cycle of the "yin yang" movements in reciprocity, comparable to the two poles of Whitehead's actual entity.  It concludes with a delineation of the differences in their definitions of time and causality.  These differences have ultimately qualified their respective conceptions of self.  [Abstract from The Philosopher's Index]
